What is an Infusion Pump?

What is a Syringe Driver?


A syringe driver is a small, portable infusion device designed to deliver medication from a syringe at a controlled rate over a prescribed period. Unlike volumetric IV infusion pumps, which commonly deliver larger volumes of fluids through an intravenous line, syringe drivers are particularly suited to small-volume, precise medication delivery. Syringe drivers are widely used in palliative care, community nursing, aged care and other clinical settings where medicines need to be delivered continuously and reliably.


What is Continuous Subcutaneous Infusion (CSCI)?

Continuous Subcutaneous Infusion (CSCI) is a method of delivering medication continuously into the subcutaneous tissue—the layer of tissue beneath the skin—using a small cannula and an infusion device. CSCI can be useful when a person is unable to take medicines orally, has difficulty swallowing, or requires a continuous and controlled delivery of medication. The prescribed medication is prepared in a syringe and delivered gradually through a subcutaneous infusion site.


How Does a Syringe Driver Work?

A syringe driver uses a motor-driven mechanism to move the plunger of a syringe at a controlled rate.
